Getting in the Christmas Spirit at the Dominion Energy Christmas Parade 2017 | Richmond, VA
The Dominion Energy Christmas Parade has always been one of my favorite events to capture every year! Everyone gets into the Christmas spirit, puts on their beanies, mittens and holiday attire and lines Broad Street from the Science Museum of Virginia all the way down to the Coliseum at 7th Street. I just love the energy all around me when I step out into the line in front of the museum to capture all of the action! The crowd is excited, sipping their hot chocolates, kids are eagerly awaiting Santa (who makes his majestic appearance at the end of the parade) and the CBS 6 crew is reporting right beside me, getting everyone hyped and ready! There are so many fantastic performances at each year’s parade, from award winning marching bands, talented dance teams, Star Wars characters and more! So much hard work and creativity is put into each and every float, costume and performance and it is totally worth venturing out into the chilly air for a couple hours to behold!
From my perspective behind the camera, I get to see everything close up and personal. Every year I bring two cameras, one with a wide angle lens and one with a telephoto. I strap the telephoto to my hip for easy access for capturing close-ups of the performers. Throughout the morning I am running back and forth, jumping over camera man chords, and slinging both cameras back and forth, depending on what attraction is coming my way! It’s a few hours of organized chaos, if you will, but that’s one of the reasons I love capturing the parade! The fast pace challenges me to frame and capture thousands (yes, thousands!) of shots with only a few seconds to think about my composition. I also need to be sure I am capturing joyful expressions and no faces mid-blink. The morning goes by so fast but is so worth it! Being able to capture the excitement and cheer of the parade is something I look forward to every year. Enjoy some of the highlights and some of my favorite photos from this year’s parade!
