There are many benefits to having an engagement photography session before your actual wedding day comes! A majority of couples have probably not been in front of a camera before (other than taking selfies, or course!) Nerves can come into play more than you think when you step in front of your wedding photographer’s camera for the first time. If you haven’t chosen your wedding photographer prior to scheduling an engagement session, I recommend doing that first! Having your engagement session with the wedding photographer that you have chosen will help you and your fiance to get to know him or her better, feel comfortable in front of the camera and get used to your his or her photographic style.
Engagement sessions are also very fun for you and your fiance because you get to let your personalities shine by showing off who you are and perhaps what brought you together! When thinking about what kind of engagement session to have, consider your interests or the type of mood you are looking for in your photos. Some couples like to have traditional, romantic sessions in a beautiful location that has meaning to them. Others like to have themed sessions based on an interest that they have together, like cooking, playing a sport or even working out!
One of the most fun engagement sessions I have photographed was with a couple who loved to cook together! We set up in their kitchen at their home and I captured the joy that they shared while making an apple pie together. It was like creating a little story for them that represented something that made their relationship unique. (And then we all ate the pie at the end!)
I also always love traditional romantic engagement sessions. Couples usually pick their favorite place to have their photos taken. It is usually a spot that means something to them, perhaps the place that they got engaged. Sometimes it is just a beautiful park or garden with potential for some magical photos. So, having an engagement session can be a lot of fun for both you and your photographer and can really help the two of you to get comfortable posing and being in front of the camera. It is also a chance for you to be able to see what you look like in photos together and let your photographer know perhaps what poses or angles you like and don’t like before your wedding day comes.
One more plus to having an engagement session is that now you now have some professional photos to use in your Save The Date and/or wedding invitations! Your friends and family will also be able to see how cute you are together before they see you at your wedding :)
Here are some of my favorites from past engagement sessions!
